Hi there everybody! Been browsing this site for awhile and wanted to join, but being a bit of a techno-phobe (i.e. knowing stuff all about computers!) have put it off till now. Anyway,
what i wanted to ask was the average prices of some of the most popular Monsters everyone keeps in different countries. Here in Australia, the government tends to be pretty anal about letting particular species in so prices tend to be pretty steep, and the variety stinks. Reading about some of the prices u guys (in particular, the US and Asia) pay makes me want to weep or bang my head against the wall! Below are some of the average prices i have seen or paid for in oz-

*Peacock bass : $125 - $400 4inches

*Gars: $200 for 7 inches spotted
$500-$900 7 inches alligator

*Arowanas: Silvers : $350-$700 7 inches

Asian :$2500 10 inches Golden
-$4000 -$5500 10 inches red

Jardini/leich : $80 7 inches

*RTC/TSN : $400 - $1000 7 inches

*Bichers : $400 - $600 5 inches

*Channa : $400 7 inches

*Tinfoil : $35 2 inches/ $150 9 inches

*Giant gourami : $75 3 inches

*Dats : $400 5 inches

The above are in Australian dollars ($1 Aus = approx $0.70 US)
Note-most of the above with the exception of tinfoils and oz arowanas are only available
very rarely. Pirahnas are illegal (only ever seen here once) and arapaimas are only available if you are on really good terms with a select few lfs owner (about $1000 a pop).

Sorry for the long post, just curious about what other countries are paying for there Monsters. As u can see, keeping Monsters in oz can be really expensive.

that jardini isnt a bad price at all... but all of the others:OMG:........

anyways welcome:welcome:

welcome, ya those prices are crazy. there is a few guts on here from Australia. they prob will help u find all the deals. good luck. what kinda fish do u have

fishnthings - jardinis and leichardis are Aust. natives and can be commonly caught in the northern parts of oz up to 1.2m easily. Actually, if u wanted to buy in quantity like some of the stocking societies do to stock dams, they can be purchase for approx. $5 as fingerlings from hatcheries.

USMC - at the moment, i have 1 rtc, 2 alligator gars, 1 silver aro, 1 tsn, 5 temensis, 2 barramundi, tinfoils, approx 150 koi and afew odds and ends.

Went on a spending spree about a month ago-got rid of all my previous fish and purchased the above(except the kois). Reason being that they are hardly if ever available here

Welcome aboard the MFK express !

As you probably already know, the prices of anything is driven by the market. Is it difficult to be able to import your own fish and in return sell them so that you can have your fish and pay less than your average prices? Just a thought :) I guess, I mean, if I lived in Oz, I would keep the natives. The lungfish, the leichthardi, baramundi, etc..but then, here int he U.S. I couldn't keep natives because I was told by a fish and game warden that it is illegal to keep native fish...that was years ago. Not sure if that is still in effect. Oz has a great variety of fauna, and I could understand why the environmental agenciea are protecting the wildlife. Look at the camel, feral pigs, and the feral cats, the cane toad, they are decimating some species, and driving them to extinction. I don't think yoiu'd want snakeheads dominating all your lakes and rivers:) Someone said "contentment is great gain :)"

Oh, thanks for the welcome. First time i've joined any forum ever!! Bit unsure of moving around the net.

hi Vince. Most of the fishes mentioned are actually banned from being imported or sold in the lfs in Australia. Can't blame the gov. really, with our history of feral animals damaging the local wildlife. The situation here is that while it is illegal for the lfs to import and sell some of the above species e.g. silver aro and channa, it is not actually illegal to own or display them. So the lfs can display them in their shop, not put prices for the banned fish, and sell them to regular trusted customers.

More than one lfs owner told me this years ago when i tried for months to buy a silver aro (ended up paying $650 for one of the few available:( ) , don't know if its still true-corect me if i'm wrong anybody?

Actually took me 2 months of continuosly looking in all the lfs to finally source one. It died on me when someone fed it some cooked beef (left a dirty oil layer on the suface):swear:

Rare fishes were noctoriously difficult to find after 9/11 when airport security was jacked up. However, in the last few months, they have become more available for alot less, hence a spending spree on my part e.g rtc only $400 instead of previously over $1000.

Anyone know why?

hey, do you know how to ship fish?

im in socal, so the prices are pretty much all cheap for those fish.
i think we should trade fish lol. like, you get a bunch of leichartiis , and i'll trade you datnoids or pbass for them. or something like that. because its hard to get leichartiis around this time.

let me know if you're ineterested.
