I have a 55 gallon tank that I currently have mollys, platys, and tetras in. I am getting ready to move and I am donating these fish to a pet store. I want to get into having cichlids (oscars, JDs etc) and I wanted to know what would be good fish to get for my tank. Any information would be greatly appreciated

senegal bichirs. 2 or 3 could stay in the 55g for life. They are awesome fishes

If you want to get into bigger fish its time for a bigger tank. As for the 55g....some exodons. Or some compressiceps are a cool cichlid that dont get huge.

Oscar? A 75g

IMO

Single Fish 55G Tank: Jack Dempsey (possibly a pair), Green Terror, Blue Acara, Cuban Cichlid, Severum, Nicaragua cichlid, Blackbelt Cichlids,

2-3 Fish 55G Tank: Salvini, Firemouth, Convicts, some geo's (some do get BIG)

4+ Fish in 55G: Rams, Apisto's, Keyholes, curviceps, checker board cichlids, Panda Dwarf Cichlid, Rainbow Cichlid

Do some research on Peacocks.
Beautiful, but not sure how many males you can put in there.

Here is an example

Yes. How many can live a healthy life in a 75g

I think you could get away with keeping an oscar in a 55g. But I would go at least 70g just for a single oscar. [YT]tvbdZcOkNCU[/YT] Check this out, they are really awesome fish when kept alone in a single tank :)

PS : The oscar in the video is kept in a 30g tank and you could see why I would keep it in at least a 70g.

55g = 12" deep
Oscar = 12+" long

Fish need the depth of the tank to be bigger than they are inch-wise.
Easier to turn around.
