I have a 55 gallon tank that I currently have mollys, platys, and tetras in. I am getting ready to move and I am donating these fish to a pet store. I want to get into having cichlids (oscars, JDs etc) and I wanted to know what would be good fish to get for my tank. Any information would be greatly appreciated

First time cichlid owner?!?!!?Start with a pair of Convict Cichlids.....The Convict will show the basic feeding, loving, and breeding behavior of most South/Central American Cichlids.............The Convict is easily bred, you will find them guarding a spawn of fry with 2-3 weeks of establishing themsevles in the tank.............Basic temp is 78-82 degrees.........Basic feed is color enhancing pellets for their staple(everday/everynight).........The "treats" can be fed once everyday, the consist of:

krill
bloodworms
tubifix worms
brine shrimp
flakes.......Use sparingly, this food tends too "get all over the place........"

MOst buy the food upstairs frozen........Just take an inch chunk out, or a square, and thaw in luke warm water for about 10 minutes...........

Yes. How many can live a healthy life in a 75g

One. You need to do some research. Lots. Keeping tetras and platies is easy. Cichlids are a different game altogether. Spend at least a month doing research before you buy ANYTHING. Do not buy a single fish until you have done your research. For a 55 the only cichlids that I would put in there for life are african cichlids. Acei's and electric yellows are hardy and look great together. 3 of each would be fine in a 55G and fairly easy to take care of.

You could get
parrot fish
salvani
firemouths
convicts
severum
angelfish
jack dempsey
green terror

You have a lot of option but I don't think an oscar would work, they get far too big.

+10

I have always wanted to do one of these. Nice white sand and very biotopeish.

Not a beginner fish really...

Try a colony of yellow labs(the fish and not dog!) and a group of 3-5 Syn. Petricolas

or as others said,

GT, JD, convicts, firemouths, etc(not all at the same time)

That was suppose to be TANG....not tank (slaps head)

They aren't that hard...check your water to see if it is in range, if short add crushed coral and some TWR and that's it really.

thanks for all of the info. I will continue to do my research on Oscars and I am going to be upgrading to at least a 75 gallon tank as well

Angelfish are very personable and attractive fish. They seem small and not so cool when they are babies, but they get rather large with happy water and lots of food.

An Oscar should be kept in a 90. I raised one O from an inch to 13 inches ( he passed in a black out) and bought another 11 inch O. I'm currently raising another O and trust me, a 75 gallon may SEEM big enough, but a 13-16 inch fish swimming around will quickly make you realize it needs more space. At least it did for me. Also I think a 55 is to small for a JD or GT. Just my .02 cents though. They will live in a 55 but I like giving my fish more space than that.
