Seriously thinking of getting rid of my fish in my 55 and keeping something different. I have cichlids in there now, goldfish in another tank and I have a saltwater tank as well. Looking to keep this one freshwater, a single fish. I want it to look good but I'm going for the less is more approach. I painted the back black and am going bare bottom. What would you recommend? Staying away from cichlids if possible

A single non-cichlid fish in a 55g. How large of a fish? Any type of personality or traits you're looking for?

How about some type of gourami. A kisser perhaps?

I'm looking for a fish large enough to stand out in the aquarium. Not so small that you have to find it, but not so large that it looks uncomfortable. I'm aware of the restrictions of a 55 because of the width of the tank. As I said above I am not putting in any kind of substrate, the background is black, and I'm shooting for the less is more look. This will be "my tank" so to speak, its located where I watch football or where i sit and have coffee in the mornings. I'm looking for a pet in a way.

Rainbow wolf fish?

I'll check them out
I have never kept a wolf fish, but would like to. The rainbow seems like the kind of fish that may be better kept solo and should fit nicely in a 55.

What I've read so far is that they like their planted tanks. From experience keeping fish that enjoy plants and foliage in a bare tank stresses them out and makes them hide. Having a fish that hides is a no go for me. I've come to love the personality and just "in your face nature of the oscars, channel cats, goldfish and even some of the salt water species I've kept over the few years. I guess what I'm getting at is I want something that is out most of the time.

Gulper catfish would be cool. Might get boring to some people after a while though
