Ok OP, my first suggestion, although a cichlid, would be a breeding pair of discus. They will be beautiful in the tank and since you're going bare bottom, maintenance for them should be pretty easy.

Another suggestion, a bottom dweller, would be 6-8 pictus cats. In a group such as this they should be pretty active and fun to watch.
I gave it some thought. I've been going around the idea of discus or angelfish. I understand that juvi discus require 3-5 feedings a day and daily water changes. I leave for work at 7am and I don't get back home until 6/6:30 that night. I imagine feeding morning, when I get home, and then before I go to bed would be sufficient? I read that they do best in groups of 5-6 and that each discus should have "10 gallons" so would 5 adults be okay? Now the nitty gritty, I do not have anyway to store water. There's simply not enough room in a studio apartment to have a holding tank, and I don't think the old lady would be happy with one just setting somewhere. My water is good enough to drink, I do a 50% wc every three days on the goldfish tank, the 55, and the saltwater all from the tap without any signs of distress so would I be alright if I had discus? Obviously if anything just isn't good enough for them I can do angels. Just food for thought.

solo puffer tank, solo serra elong piranha, other types smaller growing
piranhas/rhoms, rhom grow out (takes a long time to grow out/very slow
growers), maybe switch it up and get a nice rare turtle that stays under 6-7"
like diamon back terrapins, or salamanders/axolotls & etc etc...
