I was thinking of it. But we decided we like the plain wood look.

If you go with the natural wood look, I would suggest sealing the wood with some sort of sanding sealer to help keep out moisture. It won't take long for the stands to start showing sign of moisture intrusion.

I was thinking of just staining them and putting a finish thats water resistant. The first one i made had a twisted 2x4 and im having trouble getting it level. I may redo that and try a stain or paint.

That would work just fine.

I painted mine, but I might not have gotten it thick enough. I have a couple spots that are already showing signs of water intrusion. I'm contemplating a new design or switching to steel, but even that has down sides.

I got 3.5 shelfs out of $90 in materials. If i have to rebuild every few years its no biggy.

Peacock bass
Blood parrot
Red bay snook
Jaguar cichlid
Pike cichlid
Raphael catfish
4 pleco
100 or so guppys
4 random smaller african cichlids
Breeding pair of convicts.
Figure 8 puffer
120+ convict fry
3" red ear slider turtle.
1 deformed 5 year old 4" jack dempsey.

Thats spread across 13 tanks.
