fish scratching?

Flashing use to be associated with Parasites or disease, but now a days alot of fish do it which makes it hard to know if they are truely sick or just doing it out of instinct. What I have found with alot of my local customers is that they think their fish is sick and run out and pump them full of meds. What they forget to do is do water changes after a couple of days and get the meds out. If the meds are left in, it can lead to poor water which can open your fish up to other diseases. You have to watch them. Some fish do it naturally and some do it from parasites. Lake Malawi Peacocks and Haps usually do not Flash unless there is a problem. Lake Malawi Mbunas Flash all day long out of habit. I do not see to many Central and South Americans Flashing unless there is a problem.

Same, also for around 3 years with no problems.

to echo everyone else, i have 3 tanks of malawi cichlids, and they all flash occasionally--its just what they do... sometimes its a dominance thing, sometimes just to scratch an itch.. ive never had any illnesses or outbreaks.. i keep my tanks around 80 degrees and keep a little salt in the water all the time...
