My tanks smell if their not clean, but only if I open the lids. Even then it's not that bad. Weekly water changes? Gravel vacs weekly? Is there wet fish supplies nearby, nets etc?

a good amount of activated carbon should help, do you know your parameters?
i would assume its waste dissolved in the water or possibly bacteria. usually overstocked or newly setup tanks will smell.

however what your expierencing isnt normal. it is possible to have a mild smell near a healthy tank if you dont run carbon, but a whole house smelling isnt right.

im gonna guess your filtration isnt up to par as that most likely the cause

My nitrate, nitrite, armonia are spot on i have 2 fx5 on a 260g and 1 fx5 on a 180g i neglected to mention my house is a 1bed room flat with bathroom, kitchen and tv all being in the same room. in a house this small its just a little over whelming if you can understand. could you elaborate on the activated carbon? or any other suggestions?

buy spot on i guess you mean 0 for ammonia and nitrite. then for nitrate you mean under 40ppm. people have different ideas of good parameters. but those i listed are what i consider ideal

activated carbon is added to your filtration, usually water is pushed over or thru the carbon as opposed to just droping a bag of it in the tank. if its really bad and you have no spot in your filtration to add it, i recommend either adding small canister filter packed with it or buying a media reactor and a powerhead.
heres a media reactor also a phosban reactor by two little fishes would work equally well.

activated carbon cleans the water of any smells and or discoloration. it is chemical filtration that absorbs chemicals as such it need to be replaced occasionally

I'm not sure if the use of carbon is a good permanent solution to your problem as it tends to remove good minerals as well as pollutants. And it gets expensive. But if we can determine why your tanks smell bad in the first place, maybe it can be fixed without masking symptoms. Do you feed a lot of meaty foods? Any bacterial blooms lately or decomposing matter in your filters?

Great question...overfeeding..and leaving it in can make it smell...

you really dont have to worry about carbon tank minerals out of your water if you feed your fish a varied healthy diet, as not everybodies water is the same.
checking for left over food is good advice. i dont suppose you feed massivore pellets aussie? i heard from multiple people that they smell horrible

actually the only things i feed are massivore pellets, massivore delights, arowana sticks and spectrum for the african cichlids

-aussie native tank
10x silver perch
3x salmon tail catfish
1x jardini
3x spangled perch
10x yabbies

feed only massivore pellets, massivore delights and arowana sticks nothing ever left actually im sure if i poured a whole packet in they would still eat it all!! feed 2-3 times daily w/c every week filration is 1 fx5, tank is 7x2.5x2 10ml glass stats are 0, 0, 25

-african cichlid tank
20x electric yellows
15x cobalt blues
15x mpanga
9x acei
15x mangano
1x b/n pleco
5x kadango red

feed only spectrum once a day or every other day, nothings is ever left, although filter and gravel is always very orange when disturbed, filtration is 2 fx5 tank is 6x2x2 10ml glass w/c once a week stats are 0, 0, 30

-murry cod tank
1x murray cod

feed only blood worm at the moment ( its very small ), feed 2 times daily there is usually some amount not eaten, tank is 3x1x1 gravel vac and water change one a week, filtration is ehiem canister stats are 0, 0, 15
