First and far most.. ANY one who intends on acquiring a fish tank or any animal for that matter should do plenty of research on it before obtaining ... ( could be the #1 reason RESEARCH is out there in the first place) ..at over my time here at MFK i have seen many posts that has just blew my mind ..one example is the lady who took her kids in to i think it was PetSmart or CO the lfs really doesn't matter here...any way she got her kids a fish bowl ... fish bowl in hand she approached the check out line with a bag that contained some Angelfish to out in the bowl... the store should be fined for even selling it to ..seeing the workers are said to have knowledge in the fish world... believe me many other post apply here...........

Then a dead oscar after a week.:(
'Mommy, can I get another oscar?'
'Yes, honey. Fish are disposable so who cares.'

I hate lunatics who sell fish not fit for a size of a tank.:WHOA:

whats even worse about it is i believe old school rule they taught was one inch of fish per gallon.. so this tells your avrage dummy hey i can have a 10 inch oscar in a ten gal.
...hm i wonder if there will be room for the feeders?

was shopping one day and the lady in front of me in the check out line was holding a one gallon with undergravel filter and a small plastic plant in one hand and in the other was a bag with one black moor, one yellow molly, and one neon tetra.

i told her not to do that, and she said "it's a free country". then her head exploded. (oh wait that last part was just in my head.)

Ahhhhhhh wormy, things you have to look forward too!

We have fish and birds at work, everyone is a cichlid expert, and everyone I talk to either has an African gray or a cockatoo.

I have an oscar "this big" ( it's a visual thing, they make it out to be over 1ft long almost pushing 2)
when I say "surly it can't be that big",

they look at me like I am calling them a lire, which I clearly am and repeat themselves, shrinking their fishing hands to a grown adult size...

---------------------------

People lie all the time, some times its hard to know if people are fibbing or not.

When people chose tropical fish and you ask them "do you have a heater" and they say yes, you can only assume they have one... until they point into our tanks and ask, "what is that stick"

if you repeat the question, do you have one in your tank, they look at you weirdly, you just put the fish back into the tanks, walk over to the heater shelf and pull the most expensive heater off and ring it up for them. then continue to bag up their fish.

I heart my job...

What LFS should do Is give the proper advise...then offer some sort of exchange program instead of the dollar or two of feeders. Then best trade in value I've ever got was a lid for a 60 gallon.

I agree that people should only keep animals with the proper equipment.

With this said do you really want some government official that has no idea, or even worse listened to petsmart, making rules for when where and how you can keep an animal. Get ready to keep plastic fish.

I think that it's our job as fish keepers to educate the public and STOP using pet stores that are not acting responsibly. Without our cash the bad ones will fall by the wayside.

I think my stores the only LFS around here that makes sure the customer dosnt overstock or do anything harmfull to a fish.

My manager makes sure even at check out that the buyer has the right setup, and refuse to sell the fish if they disagree to our "recommendation". And if they still wants them anyways, we make sure we sell it to them without the 10day guarantee

when i first started out on the site i was guilty myself but in the end i learned what is suitable for tanks.every time i go to a lfs it seems i always have to stop a customer from stocking there 10 gallon with a large central american fish. For example i was surprisingly cussed out for telling a lady it was wrong to put a 13 inch oscar in a 25 gallon tank.:irked:
