I think my stores the only LFS around here that makes sure the customer dosnt overstock or do anything harmfull to a fish.

My manager makes sure even at check out that the buyer has the right setup, and refuse to sell the fish if they disagree to our "recommendation". And if they still wants them anyways, we make sure we sell it to them without the 10day guarantee

good manager

^Yeah, you bet.

She got into a argument with a long time customer that has money, and no care in the world.

Has a red devil, feeds him neon tetras for fun. And keeps buying the largest cichlids we have, hoping they dont fight...

They fight, hes there a few weeks later for another $50 Cichlid.

I agree that people should only keep animals with the proper equipment.

With this said do you really want some government official that has no idea, or even worse listened to petsmart, making rules for when where and how you can keep an animal. Get ready to keep plastic fish.

I think that it's our job as fish keepers to educate the public and STOP using pet stores that are not acting responsibly. Without our cash the bad ones will fall by the wayside.

I agree !!! Maybe we can start a public awareness site devoted to this anybody on board?

dont you love the mentally challenged people like that. i get the samething...how long would that oscar live with my piranha....ah hell i'll take him and see. you can talk and talk but the stubborn side of ignorance usually wins. i really love the customers that come in stinking of weed or beer and proceed to tell me what is what...i smile nod and wander off to babble on ward to no one about nothing remotely true on this blue planet.

if could refuse sales i'd be golden there half the people would either learn or go somewhere else (most would go kill something from somewhere else though).

most nights i come home sit down review my day and wonder how that many f'ing stupid people can procreate so damn fast. i love and hate my job depends on the customer i'm dealing with at the moment.

i hate seeing healthy fish used for someone else's amusement one guy got pissed when his "killer fish" got sicker than hell from using feeders and "target fish" and damn near died...i've been warning him and warning him.

Jason

i will mention the no guarantee idea to my boss though that is one way to either teach the little beggars or send them elsewhere to terrorize employees.

its sad but true, and really sucks,
however I don't think much will ever change. some one of a kind non retrail shops will be the best bet and maybe the occasional knowledgable retail fish keepers might recommend and do the right thing...but the store doesn't care, they are about profits, not right or wrong and what fits and what doesn''t...
I had a friend who used to work at a petsmart or something similar and actually told a customer after finding out what they had for tanks and what they wanted to put in in, highly recommended against, made some reasonable sugguestions, the customer was soo adement, finally he said you'll have to get them from elsewhere, and he refused to sell them... about 10 minutes later the same customer with store manage at the side came up and the manager asked why he refused to sell the lady the fish she wanted....he explained, manager said doesn't matter, she's the customer, give her what she wants, he stood up for himself and the fish, and still said no, and manager said well if you don't you'll be needing another job...finally he gave in packed up the fish, and later that night got written up for poor customer service and insubordination...
its a shame that people who don't have the slightest clue should even be allowed to buy them. Stores will always sell to whoever is buying, but don't always punish the store, its the idiots who don't have a clue and worse yet don't even care that should be done away with. I visit our new petsmart often and talk with the head fishkeeper all the time, and love but hate some of the stores she tells about a lady who thinks a goldfish who lives 1 maybe 2 years has had a great long life... ??!?!!? WTF are you kidding me? lmao.. try a hundred years making a good goldfish life....
another customer who buys about 20-30neons every month, cause so many die in her 20 gallon tank, but likes to have the tank full of them for when company comes over...;ladkjfal;skjfdf
now look what you went and made me say and do....rant and rave.. please make me stop!

People lie all the time, some times its hard to know if people are fibbing or not.

When people chose tropical fish and you ask them "do you have a heater" and they say yes, you can only assume they have one... until they point into our tanks and ask, "what is that stick"

if you repeat the question, do you have one in your tank, they look at you weirdly, you just put the fish back into the tanks, walk over to the heater shelf and pull the most expensive heater off and ring it up for them. then continue to bag up their fish.

I heart my job...

LOL. I know... it's not funny really. I think stores who have the knowledge of what will happen to that fish (ie someone with angelfish in one hand, and a small fish bowl in the other should refuse to sell it them, and explain why, but to be honest....
Person buying it, should know what they are getting into and it's their responsibility. I'm not going to buy a german shepherd without knowing anything about them. It's just trying to break the barrier that fish are animals too, and should be treated as such. Then there are the people who know better... and if they don't like what you say, they'll go find a store who doesn't ask questions.

True true!
Yes it is true that people are ignorant and don't think of fish has being live and feeling animals. People feel they are easily replaceable and that is a problem with our culture in America, the disposable society. I have heard this, or read this with experienced fish keepers also. Just yesterday I was reading a thread about someone wanting to know the humane way to kill a fish, just because the fish is too aggressive and other fish keepers were giving him advice on how to kill an aggressive Jack Dempsey. Ridiculous. Anyway, it is our responsibility as responsible fish keepers to eliminate the stupidity and educate this stupid. That is one thing I like about my local fish store "Parrots of the world" John the manager will talk to each and every customer and find out what their set up is and how to best accommodate their fish. Not many people will do this. I am wanting to expand my collection to brackish and saltwater fish (one reason I am here), to educate myself and have you kind people educate me before I go out and kill a bunch of fish. I know I ask a lot of questions and sometimes I may become annoying to the more expert/advanced fish keepers, but I will keep asking until I can answer other people's questions on brackish and saltwater fish. At the same time I will always be available to answer any questions (even though this may not be the right place) on community fish tanks or fish. Thank you for being patient and answering my questions, but know that I will always be there to answer yours, as long as I know the answer.

I want to say something for this forum. Over the years I have been a part of a great many forums, club, and organizations. Be it breeding dogs (AKC), building classic/antique vehicles (Nifty Fifties, Hubcity Cruisers), or digital art (DeviantArt.com) not to mention others that I can't even remember. This forum and it's members are some of the most passionate and knowlagable people I have ever had the pleasure to come in contact with. In all cases without a doubt people who care about what they do, job or hobby-wise, are the ones who can actually make a differance. I whole heartedly agree with what has been said here, and can only hope that through each of us being proactive in doing what we know to be right, and helping to guide those who don't know what will and won't work, that the world can not only be safer for fish and other animals, but for all of us as human beings.

So in conclusion, I just want to offer a heartfelt THANK YOU! to everyone here who is trying to enlighten and education everyone out there the proper and humane way to keep fish.
