Fish suggestions for living room tank

Tank is a 50g wide. Dimensions are 36" long, 18" wide and 21" tall. I was thinking 1 big fish or a few mid-sized fish. Although I would like some catfish and stuff its just not gonna happen downstairs so the fish needs to be somewhat interesting/colorful and no hiding. I'm displaying it in my house so it needs to look aproachable. Freshwater tank btw, tropical. Lots of personality would be nice. No oscars.

Reason for new tank is I made a deal with my parents if I get a 4.0 gpa for a whole year they will allow 1 fish tank of their choice somewhere downstairs. Shouldn't be too hard as I have a 3.8 gpa right now.
