Fish Tank Ban

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not rocking anything special experience-wise, I've only got two 55 gallon tanks at home. I just assumed that I'd be able to handle a 20 gallon for the next 2 years while I'm finishing school. I realize that makes me nothing on this board, but I thought I could get sound advice. I assumed toning down my ambition to a small tank was reasonable. I'm sorry to offend so many of you by not being on your level, and I apologize that I thought I could find help here.

I'd go with a 20 gallon and stock with either mollies, platies, guppies, or swordtails. Also you could put 4 or 5 cory cats in there as well.

Don't let the title of this website fool you, you don't have to have a monster tank, or monster fish to be valued here. You didn't offend anyone, and we aren't upset at you not being on "our level". We are just saying if the campus says no tanks, then no tanks would probably be a good idea. If I had that rule the most I would get if a 5 gallon bio-type betta tank.

^what he said.
I just feel irresponsible advising anyone to violate a housing contract, that's all. not belittling you.
Bettas have big personality for their size, and I prefer wild type males or plakats. A small planted tank for one can be very nice in limited space. One of the best personality fishes I ever had was just a female betta.
but good luck, whatever you do.

What about Fig 8 puffers' (Tetraodon biocellatus)?
They look pretty neat and have a cool behavior.

or Bucktooth tetra (Exodon paradoxus)?
Those are what I'm buying next time I find a cheap tank.

I think we have all done well enough reminding him of the rules and the risks. It is up to him to decide whether he will take the risk or not. From there, let's focus on answering his questions.

If I had a single 20 or 30 gallon, I would probably do a shell dweller tank, but I am into African cichlids.

I think a 20L with some Africas would be cool & low maintance.

Another option if you want to get into it a little more would be a 20L with some small tetras like neons and a couple of rams & Ottos, you could also plant the tank and make a soda bottle DIY C02 reactor. The lighting for the tank could be a double T5 fixture with a 6500k & 4000k bulb. Use a sponge filter and you could make a great looking set-up in a small area. This would make a pretty cool project and look really nice. I think you could have fun with it.

Also if you're concerned getting caught why not come up with some creative way to quickly hide the tank if the landlord shows up? Like a big cardboard box that fits over it? YOLO lol
