Fish Tank smell / filtration question?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The yellow is prolly from tannin and the smell maybe (if this tank is new) it's still cycling and the filter isn't functioning properly (No beneficial bacteria)

I think I would up the filtration. Run an additional Aqua Clear 110, cut back on the amount your feeding maybe and most definitely do some weekly water changes. 30-40% as well as rinsing the sponges as often as you feel like it, minimum of once a week.

And another note on this, your Eheim 2028 is only rated at the top end for a 158 gallon tank. You are WAY under filtered IMO. I would consider getting another filter and an Aqua Clear 110. That Eheim only performs as listed below:
  • Aquarium Size: 158 gal
  • Pump Output: 277 gph
  • Filter Circulation: 198 gph
  • Delivery Head: 6`7"
  • Filter Volume: 1.9 gal
Get a Fluval or Rena to boost that water turn-over rate and filtration capacity.

not enough filtration i would reccomend doing water changes twice a week run charcoal and ammo remover and the smell also could be from driftwood is there any wood in the tank? you have a lot of fish so water changes and some quality filtration are in need

WOW - that is a lot of information to take in at once. you people really know your stuff. the tank has been running for 3 months now. i feed the fish twice a day (Hikari food sticks and frozen bloodworms and brine). the water paramaters i dont know what they all are. i only have checked the PH and it seems to be in check.
as for what is in the tank, there is 1 piece of drift wood that has been in water for a couple of years now so i cant see that being a problem.

in the Eheim Filter there is: the Biomax balls and some bacteria collecting balls. as well as a couple pieces of foam.. nothing special as far as im concerned.
i will for sure look into Carbon/Ammonia in the filter.

as well as maybe eventually i'll look into another filter possibly - when i can get some money for that.

thanks again for the ideas here.. i will try a new rountine of doing water changes in smaller amount more often..
