i have a 29gal with a firemouth and a jack dempsey and a couple gold fish. i have sand substrate and live plants. my only problem is that it continues to stink. i do water changes and every thing. for filtration i have 2 marine land bio wheel 150's which are rated for a 30 gal. so i have twice the power on there. any ideas on why it continues to stink? i have no trouble with my 55gal which has an O and a RBP. could it be the live plants decomposing causeing it to stink? any help would be great

the plants are probably decomposing at the roots if you have them in sand where they can't really root or get nutrients. does your 55g have sand? maybe you should stir up your sand a little.

I'd have to smell it, but you would know if the plants were the cause. They would be dead. Add some carbon to the tank, and that will help. What plants do you have?

DON'T do this. That is bad advice, and can cause many problems for the fish, plants, and BB. Plants root just fine in sand (actually easier for them to root in than gravel) and will thrive in sand.

What are your water perams? A high level of ammonia will cause a nasty smell to the water along with some types of fungus.

arent you suppost to stir the sand every so often? because rotting food in the sand could be building pockets of gases in the sand? and couldnt rotting food in sand be causing the smell as well? because I know it does with gravel...

the 55 is gravel and plastic plants so the O doesnt tear them up. i was thinking it was the plants. but i dont know. and i dont know what type of plants they are a mix some hybrids. and when i do my water changes i stir up the sand to release air pockets. i will get my water perams and it has the smell of over feeding but i dont over feed them. this is the first time i have had this happen. i just want it to stop.

It dosn't take much to produce a bad smell in only 29 gallons of water.

true, but like i said it has never happened before and i have had this 29g set up for around 1 yr. even when my O was in there when he was smaller it didnt become stinky like it is now. oh well i guess i will just try different things until it goes away.
