fish tank stank

We had a problem with a bad smell about a year ago in our 100 gallon tank. No plants....no overfeeding and lightly stocked. I added some extra carbon to the filters for a couple of weeks and added a layer of crushed coral to the substrait...the problem went away.
 
alright i may have to do that. i am looking for anything that will rid the tank of the smell.
 
Is it a fishy smell? sort of like how a lake smells sometimes, if it is its most likely just from having a bit over stocked 29gal. My 55 gal gets a little stanky with my breeding pair of Jack dempseys. I do a gravel vac and larger then normal water change, and it usually occurs around the time the filter needs a good cleaning
 
Do u still have the Stankifus Effdicokki in there? That might be the source. I say if the water params are normal then add carbon or more carbon. Fish are suppose to stink underwater right?
