hopefully this aint posted any where else.....I checked but couldn't find anything...
So here it goes......I was wondering can you keep a fish tank in a garage?
Because my Mom doesn't want anymore fish tanks in the house, and I just got a 180....
So I was goin to put it in the garage.....But I was wondering if anyone else had tried it?
And what kind of heater you need in the winter? And what would you do in the summer
when it gets too hot? And by the way I don't have insulation in my garage..Just a regular
nice garage...

And I live in Michigan,Jackson to let ya kno what the climate is like.....****ttttty.....
But has anyone here tried it? If so please tell me what you did...

Thanks.Tj

I keep 3 tanks in the garage...But I live in Cali. So the outside temp does't drop to freezing, so I can maintain tanks temps at 76-80 degrees. I just got to find room any where I can...

I don't think you can keep tanks in an unheated garage in MI in the winter. The heaters will never keep up.

I have the opposite problem. If i kept them in the garage, they would boil alive. It gets over 95 in the garage in the summer. Yuk

As a fellow member from Michigan, I would say that there is NO WAY that you'd be able to keep a fish in an un-insulated garage. It gets 15-20 degrees (THAT'S THE HIGH FOR THE DAY!) out for about 1.5-2 months out of the year, and let's not even think about how cold it gets at night... and even if your heaters COULD get the tank up to 75-80 degrees in that temp, the fluctuations would be too much for ANY heater to keep stable. So, if you avoid doing so for any one reason... think of the fish. Imagine being cooped up in a room for 24 hours where the temperature fluctuates between 80/32 degrees (F) every day... that's pretty harsh, man!

You need to insulate and heat the garage. If you do that Fishtopia will be yours!

Agreed. Without insulation and climate control, you'll be fighting constant battles against heat issues in the summer and ich/hypothertmia in the winter. I kept 34 tanks in my 3-car garage in WA state. But, I installed thermal windows, insulation in the walls and on the garage doors, and installed a vent duct and exhaust from my home furnace. I hung commercial climate retaining vinyl strips between the fish side of the garage and the side I used to park my truck and tractor-mower. It takes a bit of planning, effort, and money to set a garage up correctly to hold fish. But, it's do-able.

Thanks for all the help guys....
But could I keep them in the garage for the summer...Till I find a spot to put them in the house? And if so how would I keep the temp stay at 76-82? Besides putting a fan up?
Is there like a cold-heater....lol....

And thanks again for all the replies so quick.....But I hope I can put it somewhere or else I'll be pretty pissed off:swear: Getting a 180 for nothing...

They make chillers, but I still wouldn't recommend doing it unless the garage was insulated. There would still be major temperature fluctuations.
