Okay so first of, why does everybody refer to their fishes and fish fry as 'batches,' it sounds like your baking a cake and quite frankly toying with non-living things?

A group of fish eggs is called 'Roe'. The word 'batch' became acceptable from its use by breeders. Multiple spawns of roe were tracked by many methods of alphanumeric cataloging to separate and identify roe specific to breeding pairs of adults. The cataloging identifier became known as batch (batch 101, batch C, batch 1-2a, batch WCmxF1f, etc.).

When dealing with large amounts of fish unless you wish to take the time to name them all it is very easy to refer to them as a batch. Batch meaning group of them. I.e. flock of birds or batch of fish. It's just another commonly accepted word for grouping and labeling fish.
