Fish that "ARE" Reef Safe

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wouldn't think so, but if they were sleeping or sickly it could very well be..
did they have a host anemone?

to add to the list:
planktonic feeding butterflyfish. like pyramids, zoster's, declivis, tinker's, aya, schooling bannerfish, and longnoses

no they didn't. i have never had a problem with him before and have had him for a couple of years.

nah, some of them will pick at at polyps

blue spot, valentini, sharpnose, etc

If the "green one" is actually a serpent star (has spine/stiff hair like things on its legs, the mouth has almost pincer-like things), then it can eat pretty much anything it wants, slow moving, sick, sleeping, bottom dweling fish, inverts and i wouldnt be suprised if the munched on some corals. However, if you have a LFS with a live rock tank, or a tank of you own that you use to cycle live rock, theyre great in there, as they eat most hitch hikers.

I havent heard of puffers nipping corals before, but they will destroy any mobile inverts, its that whole natural diet thing :)

I am not sure about the others but Bannerfish are not reef safe.

first: fish that are "reef safe" and invert safe

Clowns
damsels
chromis
cardinals
firefish
tangs (get big and can knock over corals/rocks)
some wrasse (fairy, flashers, other small wrasse)
anthias
mandarins
gobys (carefull with any diggers cuse they can smother any corals on the bottom of the tank)
hawk fish
some angels (small angels: coral beuties are great, other dwarfs)
basslets
foxface and rabbits (some get big and can knock over corals/rocks)
jawfish
seahorses and pipefish (no stinging corals allowed)
filefish

im pretty sure im forgetting some but this is a good basic list of families

fish that are "reef safe" but not invert safe:

lions (eat shrimp and crabs)
groupers (same as lions)
big angels (eat shrimp, crabs, snails, and some pick at polyps so ask your lfs)
puffers (eat shrimp and crabs)
leaf fish/rhinopias species (eat shrimp)
lookdowns (get big and eat inverts)
triggers (if its mouth curves up it is likely to be decently behaved, will eat any inverts, get large!! be carefull)
sharks and rays (eat inverts)

again, im probobly missing some families, sorry

Interesting list you have here!
