Fish that need alot of oxygen!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recently lost six Siamese Algae Eaters - - and one bulldog pleco - - because my airstones were out overnight . . .

the cichlids and loaches survived (uncomfortable, but alive), but the SAEs and the pleco were wiped out . . .

IMO evolution has caused most fish that have extremely high O2 requirments to be able to breathe air. My LN Gar always hits the surface for a gulp of air.

Tiger Barbs seem to like a lot of O2 and do NOT breathe air. (This is just my oppinion and I am most certainly not an expert, so take this as what it is: an unsubstanciated oppinion!

Hm this is an odd one as it doesn't really make sense. I'd be surprized if the air was the only factor in their deaths. Generaly plecs are the last ones to die if O2 saturation decreases since they can gulp air - I've seen mines do it. They can do it all night. I've even heard stories of plecs jumping onto the carpet and surviving to morning. I cannot speak for SAE but I would have said loaches need more O2 than those...

dunno that many of u have kept masheers.... but they tends to not do well in low oxy ... *they love swim right in front of the powerhead blowing out air
