I have a breeding pair of convect cichlids in a 55 gallon tank and was wondering if I could put anything in the tank with them I know they are aggressive and I was thinking something like a small type of pleco or maybe a jack Dempsey

Some dither fish that live near the surface might work, but as soon as the convicts spawn, they will kill or maim anything that moves.
Any other cichlid, or substrate living fish will be attacked.

I think giant danios would be your best bet. Nothing is guaranteed to work, convicts are mean as hell. But giant danios are probably too fast for them to catch. Other similarly fast schooling fish would probably work, just nothing that looks remotely like a cichlid or has long fins the convicts could grab onto.

I had two convicts I thought were both male until they systematically killed every single other mvoing thing in the tank the moment they had babies. I've never seen such tiny fish take on and kill fish 3-4X their size like that...momma bear syndrome is strong with these guys
