Fish to gallon chart?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just google a care sheet for whatever fish you're looking for.

+1. There is no universal way to know x amount of fish for x amount of water. You have to research each fish individually and see what its care needs are. Based on each fishes' needs you can determine if you can have said x fish in said x amount of water.

And after looking around if you find some things that just don't make sense, feel free to ask here on MFK. More then likely there are a few people who are currently keeping the fish you're interested in and can give you some first hand advise.

If you read threw the stickied topic about the 1" per gallon rule thread.. the short answer is every species is difference so an over-all general formula is just going to give you the basics of getting started.. imo take the adult fishes size.. 1.5x= the depth and 3x=length 1x=height is a good start... but for fish that are more active will need more room, fish less active would be content with less.. some fish are wider, some narrower... so a 12" adult average sized fish.. will need a 75 for life to be happy in general. Most here will argue that a 125 would be better and a 150 best depending on the species, and in some cases filtration. Oscars imo being the best example here. I've seen Oscars content in a 75 for life.. and some that where almost 18" and needed that 150. at least these are my own oppinions on the matter, and bigger is always better in reguards to water volume.

Ok. I mean is there a list of say tank sizes and what fish can be homed for life in it? I'm not actually looking for anything atm, just curious.

If I found a good deal on a tank, whatever size, I would like to look at the list and see what options I have for that tank. I don't know. Guess I'm crazy.

That'd be a heck of a lot of options... like pages and pages of options

If there were lists like this they would be rediculously huge. Your best off just looking around the media lounges and looking at fish themselves and figuring out what your wanting. Thats the place to start.

I think 1.5-2 times the fish's adult lenght for tank width and 3 times the fish's adult lengh for tank lenght is a decent measure for appropriate tank requirements for most fish.

As for how many fish you can get, that depends on what level of bio-load you want (ie amount of water changes) and the aggressiveness of the fish.
