Hey all, I was wondering how many of you had turtles and what you kept in the tank with them. I am getting a 75 hopefully next month, and I wanted to know what kind of fish you thought I should put in there? I was thinking something along the line of cichlids. Oh! I forgot, it is a 4 1/2 inch male Red Eared Slider. Anyway, I know that cichlids are pretty aggressive fish, so I was curious to see if anyone thought that I could put them in the tank with my RES with any luck. I have had fish with him before, but they havent been aggressive fish and I have always had to move them. If not cichlids, what other kind of fish should I try?

Any fish you put with him will be lunch....it may take a while but eventually the turtle will see the fish as food

Thats why my tank has decor out the wazoo. He cant catch anything in there. I am just thinking of fish that are gonna show him that they can fight back. Emphasis on cichlids.

I have a 5.5" female RES with convict cichlid, Acei, red zebra, sunshine peacock, male kenyi, a rainbow shark and 5 minnows. It's definitely possible but beware, have lots of hiding places. I did lose an ob peacock to my turtle and some minnows, it's better to buy mbunas because they are rock dwellers and hide better. Oh when I had a pair of convict last time with my turtle they would even beat on my turtle. My convicts were 3" and my turtle 5.5. My turtle was actually fearful of going into the water because of the convicts at one point.

Dang. Dont think I will be putting a male convict with my RES. I still may put a few females though. Has anyone tried putting a flowerhorn with their turtle? I think that would look good.

lol. Are those emperor cichlids?

To op:
I have put every fish you can imagine with my old red eared sliders. And trust me on this. It will be eaten. Ive had fish that would fight the turtles for food, jump out of the water to escape the turtles, and even get lodged under objects to escape the turtles. But in the end no matter how long the turtles and fish last together, unless the fish is 10"+ it will be eaten. Even if it is over 10" it can be eaten. Ive had oscars with red eared sliders and they would constantly be torn apart. At one point i kept africans and they were killed. Kept parrots, also dead. Anything and everything that cannot out swim or outsmart the turtle will die. Ive had like 10+ plecos being nibbled on or killed. If you still want to try. Throw in a bunch of minnows. I mean like 40 minnows. This should last about a week or two. When there is a school of 5+ left put in your large cichlid. I would suggest adding a cichlid that is at least 1 inch bigger than the turtle so that it can defend itself. This is what i had to do to put in my brothers old comet he gave me. It was a cool looking comet. Good luck.
