just something thats been in my head a little while, something to think about!-)

sooo, its widely accepted by most on here that a standard 75 gallon 48x19x22inch tank it the minimum for a lone oscar (lets say 12 inch oscar) right, associate this to other fish and it seems way to small dont you think?

48 inch long = 4x length of fish
18 wide = 1.5x fish
22 tall = 1.9 fish

apply that to a betta, lets say 2inch you get an aquarium
8 inch long x 3 inch wide x 4 inch tall 0.42 gallon

(people would go sick on here if you kept a betta in a tank that size lol, i keep mine in a 2.2 gallon and feel bad!)

so convict at 5 inch = 20" L x 7.5" W x 10" tall 6.49 gallon

jd at 8 inch = 32" L x 12" W x 16" 26.6 gallon

So if you scaled it up what would it be? Say .42 goes into 2.2 five times, then 75 gallons times 5 is ~400 gallons?

lol, great observation dude haha...

or in a different way, my betta tank is 8 inch cube so 4x the fish lxwxd so that would be a 4ft cube for a 12 inch oscar and equate to 475g

theres some logic missing in the fish keeping hobbie lol...

gets worse smaller, 1 inch neon 'wet pet' lol should be fine in a 4" x 1.5" x 2" tall with a weekly 80% water change lol...

Cool idea! It's difficult to compare across species though as different fish have different territory and swimming needs. A betta doesn't need to swim as much as a tetra, so despite the size difference I'd usually keep tetras in a tank with a larger footprint. I keep my betta in a 2.5 gallon vase, but most of the volume comes from the height. They are shipped in a few tsp of water! I wish there was a rule that would accommodate most species but unfortunately it's apples and oranges.

Besides that thread was talking about minimum not optimum.

its fun tho!-)

an rtc at 4.5ft;

tank = 18ft long x 6.75ft wide x 9ft tall 8180 gallons!

red bellied pacu 3ft

12 foot long x 4.5ft wide x 6ft tall 2423 gallon.

24 inch dovii

8ft long x 3ft wide x 4ft tall 718 gallons

seems very odd when you scale up the 75g dimensions though lol...
