Fish & Turtles

my water turtles do well with convict cichlids and have done well with goldfish in there too. i only feed pellets, so they arent as used to taking down live animals as most. i try to keep them full, and the fish learn quickly to avoid those "moving rock things". as far as the fish bothering the turtles, it shouldnt be an issue unless you have big cichlids or really small turtles. i wouldnt use big cichlids because they give off a lot of waste and that isnt the best idea with water turtles. and most of the small to medium cichlids wouldnt bother a small turtle, but it would be something to keep an eye on when they are firs tput together. i use fish because it brings more activity to the tank and it helps monitor water quality. if the fish are doing well the water cant be too bad, but in a turtle tank water quality can drop fast, i mean in a matter of 15 minutes it can go from everything looks fine to the fish look like they are dead. so just because they are doing well now doesnt mean you are doing enough maintenance.

That'd be great

Might sound silly, but: The stinkpot (musk) turtle ... how stinky is it ????

Stinkpots don't stink. :D

They are able to secret some type of acid which has a musky smell from 4 glands when they are disturbed. Hence the name.

The types of African cichlids I used were electric yellow labidochromis, orange blotch zebra, black peacock and blue pseudotropheus socolofi.

koo....

yeah, if you dont touch them or mess with em, they dont stink it up. and my adults are used to people so when i pick em up they dont stink. and they arent dirty turtles ether.

Howdy,

That's already great input, thanks, but maybe I get some more case-studies/experiences in this forum. I am thinking about providing driftwood which reaches above the water surface, i.e. lowering the water level in my 29'' high tank (220 gal). For fish, I was considering Red Hooks, they seem fast enough to outswim a turtle. However, I am afraid they are too fast and outcompete turtles for food.

Anyone with experience in successfully keeping :turtle: :tropicalf , please post
Thanks,
HarleyK

i would go with red eared sliders

ive read that they are more carnivorous when young but as they get older they will become more herbivorous.

but dont keep one that has been rasied on goldfish, which is the improper way to feed them anyways.

then again if they dont eat the fish they COULD eat the plants, unless you keep them well fed on vegetable matter.
