Fish Vitamins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used it to soak lower quality foods in before on picky eaters.. I have noticed it did imo help hlle issues in Oscars, pikes, and sw in tangs ect... but its debatable I guess as water changes ect where also increased and husbandry in general was improved for the fish as well. not sure if it helps boost growth... but if a fish is healthy its more likely to grow optimally.... imo more frequent water changes are the biggest growth booster once you address basic nutrition ect.

Ive got everything covered from diet to 50% water changes a week. Just want to maximize the growth potential of my fish haha. And btw (sorry if off topic), I got my gar to ear pellets and even dead silversides and fillets. Thanks a lot. :) Now my problem is how to stop him from eating. Lol

I did a day program at one of the big Australian public aquariums. One thing we did was food prep! They literally use human multi vitamins tablets and cram 1/2 -1 (from memory) into the food fish! That was used to feed sharks, rays, and a whole other array if marine fish.

I think a whole tablet would be too big when it comes to nutrition and size itself for some fish, but thats really interesting. I know they do that to dogs as well because dog vitamins are really expensive. My dad used to buy multivitamins formulated for children and would mix it with milk. Thats what our vet advised him to do. Not sure for fish tho.

Just got a bottle of VITA by Angel Drops from my lfs.
It reads:
"Vitamins for all tropical ornamental fish.
- Promotes spawning, health, colouration
- Aquarium water conditioner
- Stimulation od appetite and shiny scales in all tropical and ornamental fish
- Increases Vitality"
It says to put about 8 drops per gallon of water or 5mL per 10 gallons. Should I follow the instructions or use it to soak fish food in instead?

Fish fed a high quality pellet as their staple should not require additional supplementation. Unless the diet is lacking in a specific area I don't see the need. However, sick fish or fish recovering from an injury or illness (Hex as an example) can benifit from additional vitamin C supplementation during an following treatment. Vitamin C in this instance seems to help the immune system and aid in recovery/healing.

Fish should be fed to sustain a normal and steady growth rate. Power feeding or feeding for accelerated grow is detrimental to the fishes overall health in the long run and can lead skeletal and organ deformities as well as other health issues fatty liver et al. Each species has its normal rate of growth Oscars as an example seem to grow while you watch them while other species seem to grow very slow and most are somewhere in the middle.

Ive used vita-Chem for fw fish but i really didnt see any pros or cons to it. I did it for moray eels too but they actually benefit and need the vitamins i dont know how fw would benefit.

Unless one is feeding a low quality commercial food (or a strict diet of frozen food), liquid vitamins are a waste of $$$$.

Yeah right now I am feeding low quality pellets + silver sides + fish fillets + earthworms + shrimp. Im going to try feeding more fillets and soaking them in the liquid vitamin first. Gonna pick up some hikari carnivores on Sunday
