I dropped a "Jig Stick" (fishing rod) years ago when I was fishing Barracuda in the backside of Catalina Island. Barracudas have a very thick slime coat, very messy. Anyway, after taking out the 'Cuda from my lure (Tady 45), I tried to launch the lure again, and the entire setup which cost me close to $500.00 (Custom made Rod and Reel), slipped out of my hands, and saw a glimpse of it sinking to the bottom of the ocean. I would've jumped after it, but it was an area frequented by great whites.

I think the man thought that his fishing rod was worth more than the risks involved. Pity that he passed away.

Oh man, $500.00!!!!!!, I would have had to swim after it.

I always go in the water after I loose gear, even a bobber.

That guy had it comming. First he goes and spends between 1000 and 2000 euros just to get his fishing licence. Thats like $1,250 to $3,000 and a 500 euro fishing pole. And then swims out into some freezing lake. For that much he could have gotten a pond of his own and gone fishing everyday for free.

The whole thing sounds like a bad American express commercial.

German fishing qualification -- 1,000 Euros

Top of the line Fishing Rod -- 500 Euros

Drowning in a lake because you are too drunk and stupid to hold on to your fishing pole -- Priceless

Their are some things money can't buy, smarts is one of them.

Hi Gooda,

You're from Germany, so you need to get your facts straight before you discredit a dead man's reputation:

Here are the facts:
If you have had your Jahresfischereischein (licence) continuously since before ~1990, then you do not need a Sportfischerprüfung (qualification exam). Furthermore, in the early years after ~1990, the exam was only a couple of hundred Mark, if that. If the guy was an angler all his life, he never had to spend that much money - just the rod. And you get nice Balzer or DAM rods for much cheaper than what you say.

I myself once swam after my rod and a carp across the Lahn river (Germany) in late Fall (just around this time of the year). It's freezing cold, but I for sure understand anyone who does that. I have to add that there are very few Great Whites in German lakes, so I'd probably do it again ;)

Poor guy probably had a weak heart.

I'm glad everyone liked the article. I wonder how he died. The article didn't give much info. I agree that them saying it was an ordinay fish was stupid.
