Fish you should NOT keep.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're an uninformed hobbiest then it's good info. If you know what you are doing then it's all good.

Hard to argue the point he is trying to make. Especially if you actually read the entire article.

Indeed, he's talking about trends...the trend is the vast majority of pacu don't get enough space, etc...

"I'd like to outline the reasons why some species of aquatic animals may not be well suited for the typical home aquarium."

The fish he listed definitely are not suited for the typical home aquarium so, therefore, I agree with him. Just because he put the wrong maximum size of the Pacu does not mean that he's wrong in saying it's not suited for the typical home aquarium.

i would bet that the vast majority of fish are not kept in a tank that is big enough for clean enough .. which is really sad .. i think that the MFK community seems really big .. but in the grand scheme of things we are just a drop in the bucket ... and the rest of the bucket are not nearly as educated

Amen

The key like everything else is education. The rest will take care of itself. Example an educated hobbyist will not purchase an RTC if they only have a 40 gallon long as their "largest" tank.

That is actually one of the better articles out-laying in realistic terms, reasoning ect. As simon pointed out too.. It's not just the "monster fish" that sometimes should be avoided. The more I learn about this hobby ( and there is always more to learn idc how long you've been in it) The more fish species I find that I don't think are acceptable for the average hobbyist.

There was alot of information in a relatively small space. I found it to be an exellent first draft for a good beginners guide to "chooseing your fish".

i would like to know what the average fish "hobbyist" is ...

i would say most of us are just average since we know a fair amount and keep a fair amount of fish .. and the people that should not keep the fish listed in the article are not hobbyist just the random fish keepers ...

but i guess its hard to say what most people think are the boundarys of the term "average hobbyist"

but i will stick to the education before regulation because i would not want to ban red tail cats just because i dont have the size tank to keep them .. because thats not fair to the people who can ..

To me the average fish hobbyist thinks a 55 Gallon tank is a "large tank" someone who can tell you the difference between a "community fish" and a cichlid but not much more then that. the "weekend warrior"

The people who aren't interested enough in their fish to jump online, and seek out forums about fishkeeping ;)

The people who don't really do much homework about what they want. and care more that it looks "nice" then the fish get along.

The people who look at their fishtank like I look at my car.. If it gets me from a to b then back.. I'm cool with it. verses someone who can listen to an engine 'n tell you what make and model it is. ect..

those type people make up at least 50% of this hobby in my experiance. Personlly I belive more like 75%... But since I don't have exact numbers and statistics. I'm gonna be conservative w/ my experiances.
