fishermen killing bowfin in nj

I am an avid fisherman and just got a new rule book and in it is aphoto of a snakehead and a bowfin showing the difference so fishermen stop killimg bowfin.

They are so similar it doesnt suprise me that they are being killed. It would be a good thing to make people aware of the differences.
Maybe if photos similar to this one were made more public it could help this issue.

Two words...Gular Plate, even the most redneck fisherman can figure this one out.

This is a gular plate, that hard bony plate on the underside of the bowfin's jaw...snakeheads don't have one.

I CAUGHT ONE OF THOSE IN LARGE CREEK IN LA.[ LOWER ALABAMA]. IT WAS THE BEST FIGHT I'VE EVER HAD. IT JUMPED OUT THE WATER LIKE A TARPON , SEVERAL TIMES. PULLED LIKE A TRUCK. WHEN I GOT IT IN MY RAPALA TOP MINNOW WAS DONE. TO BIG FOR MY TANK, SO I PUT IT BACK. HAVEN'T SEEN ONE SINCE. VERY BEAUTIFUL FISH. THANKS FOR THE INFO NO TRING TO GET ONE.
