Fishing Bait for Fish food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Foods high in fat and/or protein don't make for a good diet. It doesn't hurt to give the fish a treat once in a while. Unless you know otherwise, bait is not a good idea since it is of less quality and freshness since it is bait. Foodstuffs used as bait is the last stop on the line before the garbage heap.

Occasional worm or other live food has it's own set of risks. If you want to compound the possibility of sickness/infection that's your choice.

I dont know of any terrestrial parasites than can affect fish- they may be able to affect us but probably not the fish
This is correct. There are lots of parasites that cannot be transmitted to fish from terrestrial areas. Now if they were aquatic, the chances of passing off dangerous parasites is another story.

Thankyou all... i hope this helps others :)
Aye,

has been interesting though
thanks again :)

over the years I've never had any problems feeding live baits to my fish. I always check out the worms thoroughly before feeding, and QT any minnows I've used. use common sense mainly. when minnows are in season around here they are cheaper then goldfish. If it looks like a good batch I buy, QT and feed. most commercially prepared baits are simply that.. baits, not food. I've never fed them. and doubt they have the nutritional value you'de need. not to mention alot have other additives that are likely unhealthy in the long-run and are s imply attractants. I've only had issues with parasites once with minnows in a QT tank, clouted it, and QT'd the tank an extra week once the feeders where healthy again.

but then again I also fish alot, and anything less then appropriate for my fish gets used as fishing bait ;) If it's questionable.. generally I use it fishing and buy new "bait" for my pets.
