Aight, I've been fishing a few times, but I'm no expert, still love it though. Anyway, I want to give fishing for Bowfin a try. I know they are relatively common around here ( saw some behind my house in the bayou ) so I want to try catching some of them. Would love to have some for my fish tanks, but just catching them would be totally fine with me.

Live in Mississippi. Any one know any special sites, tips, pointers you could give me? First time for me, so I guess it will be a learning experience.

Has anyone else ever fished for them? If so, what are your experiences?

i fish for them once in a while the biggest was about 38" long. i caught it by accident all you need to do is attach a small bluegill or small sunfish to a hook and drop it neer the bottom on the outside of a weed bed. then just wait but the fish needs to be near the bottom otherwise you aint gonna catch it. this is all my opinion...i bet there are some guys on here that fish them daily and knowmuch more about them than me
 
Yeah, I know about that website...pretty cool. I got some lures today, spinner, crank, jig, blah blah blah. Got a rod too...just a ghetto split pole. It'll work. Its only got 8lb test line though, think I should swap it out? Going to go give it a try tomorra!
 
When I was a kid I would use stinky bait, (half dead worms), and would catch them fairly frequently. Also I once watched a guy cut a bluegill in half and use that. Seemed to me the stinkier, messier the better.
 
just get some sort of like 14lb test as a leader or such and strike king minikings work but will get demolished
 
a ugly stick could be a cheap good rod that could hold up to a bowfin.
 
I've been reading about them, it sounds like they can tear through pretty much everything. I'm hoping that when I go tomorrow I don't end up with a lot of nothing but torn stuff...lol.
 
dont get an ugly stick. you need something with backbone.

get a 7-8ft MD/HVY IM7 Graphite rod rated 12-25lb and use 15lb mono on a 6500/6600 size Abu conventional or the like.

Pikies are good baits to throw or you can use bait if you like its up to you.

I used a rapala and caught one =] it was a whiteish/pinkish/bluish colored lure. I think my bf posted the lure I had in there somewhere but I am not sure. oh and I did catch it on an Ugly stick, I love that thing. =p you'd be suprised what an ugly stick can do. Although I am sure my bowfin is nothing compared to what you are probably fishing for x__X
