Fishing For BowFin.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a rod with good backbone is a great idea, bowfin are simalar fighters to pikes.

if you not an experienced fisherman, than don't go for a conventional abu or other baitcaster, stick with spinning. you'll have plenty of time to play with birdsnests after you know what your doing.

my personal fav rod for this sort of fishing is a custom baitcaster, with a 7' lamiglas blank, abu C4, and 30-40lb braid.

lure choice depends where and when your fishing. Cold, Deep, Sunny, Rainy, fast moving, Slow moveing, lake, clear, murky. it all depends on a few factors.

is this bank or boat fishing?

Just get some shrimp from the grocery store frozen or fresh and put on a bottom rig like you were fishing for catfish. Or you could use minnows, goldfish, sunfish, they will eat just about anything.

dont get an ugly stick. you need something with backbone.

get a 7-8ft MD/HVY IM7 Graphite rod rated 12-25lb and use 15lb mono on a 6500/6600 size Abu conventional or the like.

Pikies are good baits to throw or you can use bait if you like its up to you.

dont for get the net!

yea ugly stick would make it even more challenging.. talk about light tackle

nothing like using an uglystick with 10 lb braided line, with a fw bass reel(penn) to catch some jack crevalle off the beach. if i can do that, im sure bowfin wont be a big deal. the jacks were about 10 lb though, and i do like a challenge.

get a jar of fishing pork rind and the largest mepps spinner you can find, put a rind on the hook on the spinner, retrieve slowly, you catch all the mudfish you can handle.

chances are any bowfin your catch is going to be 21 inches or less. smaller bowfin are alot more common. i use my ultralight with braided line for everything. pike/steelhead/bowfin/bass. around here they will take just about anything. nightcrawler/minnow/mealworm. good luck

My inlaws have a canal running behind there house. Usual INLAW stuff going on so I grab one of the pork chops left over from dinner a rod, a bobber. I must have caught 10 that day. One right after the other. Wish I had pictures. They will eat just about anything.

Hello
I plan to go fishing again next Sat but its PB season so not going to use lures. Bowfin sound great.

from reading these posts I let the bait sink on #5 hook ?

I plan to use chicken livers as not going to use a sunfish .

Can they be caught in canals or I am better off in lake ?

Best time day or night ?

Thanks
