fishing for the first time... please read

just got my fishing liscense.. went fishing this evening (niagara river U.S side) i cought a fish.. and some old fisher men who i wasnt with but were also fishing told me to "kill it" and i asked why and they told me it was a non native fish called the Goby? and that its hazerdous to our native fish... they said they catch about 10 a day and throw them in the trash:confused: well i couldnt bring myself to doing it so i brought it home and its in my 20 gal. tank... should i know anything.. let him go (or is what they said was right??) it looks just like this fish

its a goby, keep ur water cool and keep it. dont release it.

thats one of the fish i agree that shouldbe killed. messes up our native species.

They are non-native and are a serious threat to native species. It's illegal to throw them back in the water and illegal to keep them. Personally, I don't care what you do with it just DO NOT release it back into the wild.

ok good to know.. do you know the "proper way" to kill them

and also where did they come from? any story behind how they got into our waters?.. thanks
 
They were thought to be a bigger threath to the Great Lakes then they actually turned out to be, In Lake Erie they actaully turned out to now be one of the top prey for the smallmouth bass. But thats not saying that they dont still prey upon fish eggs.
