FISHING SEASON 2K10!!!!!!

i got around 15 fish today. Only 1 goood bass. After about a half hour of fishing i noticed a snake about 4 feet from me. That almost ended the day for me lol but i got up to take a pic and it swam away thank god. I was fishin one rod while i let my other rod just sit in the water with a worm on. On my small rod that I was using i thought i got caught on a branch, which i did and i moved my line from it and ended up having problay my biggest bass of the year. I was praying when it was on becuase i thougt my line was going to snap. About 20 seconds after letting it fight, it came unhooked....As soon as that happened i turned around and my other rod is goin nuts. I give it a tug and it feels like i have something on there that is too big to be a bass. I start reeling and knew it couldnt be a catfish becuase there arent channels in this river and i pull it up and it is the biggest eel i have ever caught.....I cut that away and then soon hooked into a nice smallie and some nice rock bass.

Great pics. I did not think eels that size were found in freshwater. Was under impression that some types breed in fresh but 6 inches or so head out to salt .

Real neat eels aren't something you see posted caught on hook.

Though the head isn't visable I do know it's not a regular old garter snake, more than not it's probably a harmless common water snake. If I were there I probably would have attempted to catch it.

A venomous snakes like a cotton mouth would have more than likely stood it's ground, if not come towards you. Early morning fishing in Florida when I used to go out fishing by myself, I used to carry a 48 inch snake hook, and just toss whatever snakes there was into the water and watch the gators go after them. A 2~3ft cotton mouth is to a 7~12ft gator is like a 10 inch worm to a big hungry Bass, the dinner bell is a ringing. Water moccasins come out though more often than not right after it rains or in the early morning for some early sunning to warm up. And they generally are known to stand there ground, sort of like there venomous and they know it.

When I had my nephew at college of NJ he got the biggest kick out of seeing a brown water snake trying to swallow a sunfish, that it had managed to catch.

CRAZY!!! haha i cant say that i hate snakes but they scare the crap out of me becuase whenever you see them, they are rolled up hiding and you just see their head lol

I knew that this snake was different than any others i have seen before and it seemed to big to be a garter but i looked up water snakes online and they pretty much look the same....so water snakes do no harm?

I have hooked into some big heels in the delaware river but that leads right out to the ocean so it doesnt surprise me....I have fished this river over 50 times in my 17 years on earth and i have not once caught an eel. THe max depth of the river is 5 feet and there is no realistic way for eels to get into the ocean from here. That is why i was suprised at the size of my catch

Im with you on that!! im honestly suprised that i stayed, every little bug that hit me or anything i was freaking out and i kept looking in the trees to see if there were any on any branches lol

American eels start of as elvers which head in from the ocean and live in freshwater for most of their adult lives. Then they go back to spawn in the ocean and die. They can get extremly big as in 5 pounds+ but thats rare due to most go back to the ocean before then.

Do they HAVE to come from the ocean?? I see no easily accessible route for the eel to have come from the ocean from where i caught it

Elvers have been known to climb over locks and dams. They all come from the ocean unhless someone just releasing eels.

Man I'm the same way, I see one and for a few minutes I'm all tensed up. The crazy part is they usually just ran away!

People here catch big eels(2'+) in the Delaware river all the time while fishng for catch catfish.

i go to the delaware about once a week and the people where i fish skin the eels right on the peir and keep them for dinner...not appealing to me
