This thread is basically for alternative ways of fishing. No I'm not talking about explosives and such. More along the lines of jug fishing, trot lines (I.e. long lines), tree branch lines, etc... Personally I enjoy jug fishing. I have a home made rig that is made extremely durable and very affordable. I'm not sure about laws and regulations in other states but here every person in the boat is allowed 30 jugs each I believe, may be 40. 2 or 3 people in a boat that's a lot of lines in the water in various places. Now if you used old milk jugs or 2 litre jugs that's a massive amount of space required just to haul them. I use those bright colored noodles that people use in swimming pools, at the lake, ocean, etc.

Things needed

Swimming noodles (you may call them something else I dunno)
Roll of duct tape or electric tape
Thin rope (I use the jug fishing line sold at wal mart and other places)
Swivels
A metal coat hanger
Line of your choice (I use spider wire, 50 lb test, braided line)
Hooks and rig of your choice.

First I cut the "noodle" into 1/3's. Then about 3 or so inches up take ur tape and wrap it around the noodle several times (4 or 5 times with duct tape is fine). Then take your thick line (rope) and wrap it around the tape 2 or 3 times and tie a knot. Make sure you cut your rope @least 3 ft long or so. After ur knot is tied take the coat hanger and bend it to where you can poke a hole in the tape and noodle to the middle. ( the center of these are hollow & they are foam). After you get your hole poked use the hanger to feed the extra line threw the hole and feed it out the bottom below the tape. Attach a swivle and rig of your choice. Then your g2g!! I do most of my fishing at night so I also got some reflective trailer tape and put it on the top of the noodle with tape. When a fish is on or even playing with the bait the noodle stands up and waves back and forth. With refelctive tape, at night we can line a hole cove and sit at one end and tell when a fish is on from the other end. We have hooked 40 lb monsters and it does damage the noodle and they can't hold it under for to long at all. Give it a try! :)

If anyone has a rig they'd like to share *other than rod and reel* then POST IT!!

I've been known to flycast without a rod. Seriously, I read about it in Joan Wulffs book, and gave it a whirl. I also saw a fella using a handline in OC MD once, he would spin a bucktail above his head and let fly. Then he would retreive it by winding the line back up on the spool. Took some nice stripers too.

I when fishing with a friend from Guatemala. He said when he was growing up they were very poor. He used a drink can. He would tie the line to the tap spool the line around the top of the can. To cast he would hold the line in one hand and spin the lure over his head and toss, he would point the can in the same direction and the line would just spool off then to retrieve he would just wind it back up. It worked better than my rod and reel. LOL

Sometimes I handline for Bluegill and Perch. It is a lot of fun!

I didn't think he meant for bait! ;) I guess I also use a dipnet, dynamite, seine net, c4, rotenone and electroshock. Just kidding on the stuff except the dipnet and seine net. Oh yea, and umbrella net too!

I've caught tuna, mahi, and wahoo on hand lines. I use parachute cord with a wire leader. I make a shock absorber out of bungee cord when I tie it off the boat's rail. The parachute cord is tied directly to the rail for security, but the bungee is rigged to take the strike. Hard to explain without a diagram or something.

The old watermen around here used to do something similar. Get a garage door spring to use as a shock absorber, and troll live bait for stripers and bluefish while they were working.

i use lines tied to trees alot. or at least used to. been using a cast net alot lately. ive even know to grab fish with my hands. haha Honest to god. a few carp, catfish, and a small mouth bass once
