I know there are a good amount of other female fishkeepers on the forum. and I searched extensively for info on this.. but as a fishkeeper are there any hazards I need to be wary of now that my husband and I are expecting our first kid? I do a majority of the tank maitence, and he does a majority of the feeding. What if any chemicals/food/water treatments/equipment ect ect should I be worried about? so far my health care provider has simply advised me from eating mercury containing fish.... and My Husband now gets to clean the kitty box. any further info would be great.

First of all, congratulations!!

From my experience as a vet tech, I can tell you that there are many medications that can be absorbed through the skin. This includes dry tablets as well as liquids. If it were me, I wouldn't handle any medications unless wearing gloves. Also, take caution with certain liquid medications as they can contain formaldehyde which you dont want to breathe in.

Also, something you should do anyways ( but many if not most of us are incredibly guilty of), is do NOT put your hands in the water if you have an abrassion or cut. There are a few zoonotic diseases that you could get. No point in risking an infection, and end up on oral antibiotics or worse. As a precaution, I would wash my hands every time you mess with the fish, and probably skip starting a syphon with your mouth. :)

If I think of anything else, I'll post again later.

Again, super happy for you!!!

Congrats! Ill tell you how my wifey did it.... she didnt touch anything ever that is related to my fish hahaah But thats what she does when shes not preggers anyway

Congrats!

I wouldn't handle any medications without gloves if you need to treat your tank for any parasitic or bacterial infections. Also make sure you wash your hands well after having them in the tank. I would avoid submerging your hands if you have an open wound and i agree with not starting the siphon with your mouth. Also heavy lifting is not a great idea (like lifting a 5 gallon bucket full of water above the tank to pour it in)! Aside from that I don't see a whole lot of issues.

Good luck,
Dr. Rupe

Switch with your husband. Make him do the maintenance and you feed em. Simple, elegant, and fixes the problem. And congratulations! Whens the little mfker due?

Thanks for all the advise guys/gals, and the well wishes. the lil' MFKer should be here around Nov. So still need to make it a few more weeks, But so far so good.

You take care of his baby
and he take care of yours (fish)

I was a pregnant fish keeper 2 years ago. Congrats on the baby.

Don't touch chemical dont drink the tank water and you will be fine. I did a water change when I was in the first stage of labor my tank had a mini cycle going on and I did not want to come home to dead fish. I even had my husband ( not a fish guy) do a water change for me when I could not leave the hospital .

I was around fish water all during my pregnancy and my daughter is perfect my labor went great too. So don't worry it's fine. In fact fish keeping kept my mind off the fear of labor. It also kept me busy when I was not working and could not do much.

If you don't have a python or hose to clean the tank get one now.

A side note enjoy all the sleep you can now.
