im still unsure of what to do to cycle a tank without fish. after its set up do i just put in ammonia? how much for say a 30 gallon?

Many methods. You could add a market shrimp, or pure ammonia. If you do pure ammonia, you want to bring the tank to 4ppm ammonia.

I dont know if it helps speed it up or not, but I got my Ammonia up to 8ppm. Only took my 240 3 weeks to cycle.

on my 180 salt im going to add a few peices of shrimps and the shells of pervious feedings..

If ya got a bait and tackle shop near by, get like three crawdads. They will cycle the tank quick.

just throw all your fish in right now, they will be fine

I'll be honest...I'll let my tank run for a week or two and then throw the fish in and their always fine.

Nope, once the ammonia is gone then you have to wait for the NitrIte bacteria to form and then the NitrItes disappear, which in turn breaks down to nitrAtes and then you are ready.

Once the ammonia is gone then you have to add like 1 teaspoon a day to keep the ammonia eating bacteria alive, until you get fish in there.
