Next thing you know after confusing what was a simple easy basic useful fishless cycling piece, you'll say you aren't even cycling a tank right now...

ouch ..... everyone makes mistakes. At least I caught it (might I remind you that you didn't catch it either??? ;)). I am cycling a tank right now, albeit failing at it. Not quite sure why.

One last question though - any idea how, in terms of speed, your method stack up to the mantain 5 ppm method?

Thanks

I really should have looked at this website BEFORE i decided to run out and buy a new setup one day and throw in a clown knife and a catfish and a jack dempsey the next day. i was extemely impatient and almost killed them all for that reason. luckily the all survived my stupidity and are thriving a year later but it was so close. I'm not nearly so impatient now. since i am going to be moving my larger fish to a 125 soon this is really helpful to avoid jeapordizing my fish like i did before

stepped in the same load as you did amber, I bought a 75 gal, i had already bought two magnificent flower horns and the local lfs store was holding it for me, but i was impatient, dropped them into the tank, next morning they were in the 4th dimension, still hurts when thinking of that incident:cry:

Yup and to me a LFS who will let you do that,
in the hopes of selling you more stuff to replace what didn't have to die
is the lowest form of LFS there is...

Not to worry, I think at one time or another we have all had that type of experience, either due to wanting the fish so bad or purely not knowing any better and nobody to properly start you out...

Just think of the people like me who started keeping fish before the internet was even around...try to research info in the library with the dewey decimal system, on something you had no idea even existed!!

Did the local libraries even have sufficient information for you?

Yes...Seeding a new filter will speed up the process considerably.
I failed to add that to the original post....I was trying to keep it as simple as possible...;)

Basically, it's for the new tank/first tank folks. They are the ones who seem to be overwhelmed by the whole "Nitrogen Cycle" thing...

How much more faster will seeding speed up the cycle. I ask only cuz I just whipped out all my BB in my FX5 by forgetting to de chlorinate the water use to prime the filter :clap.

I've done the same thing,
after cleaning out the prefilter pads in my Eheim at the sink.

I filled it up with straight tap water, snapped down the lid,
took it to the tank like 15-20 minutes after I filled it
and just hooked it up and plugged it in...

No problems, no spike, no nothing...

I believe it takes quite a bit of circulation with chlorine to totally nuke all the beneficial bacteria...

Remember the bacteria is growing new and the old is dying off constantly in a healthy filter...

It can't hurt to reseed the filter with media from another established filterI don't think it is absolutely necessary, just keep an eye on the parameters...
