Five largest cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is true, I don't believe those max sizes are written in stone. I just use fishbase.org as my number one fish information resource. They have 40600 references and 1500 collaborators. Before I actually looked it up I always thought the microlepis was directly below temensis as well.

This site claims 70 cm

Yep. Most certainly a debate that can't easily be settled.

story about boulengerchromis microlepis vs temensis from other person ( th trusth

I currently have a group of 8 B.microlepis. They range in size from 6"-9" the smallest one ebing blind in one eye due to aggression. They are very aggressive to each other and I see a lot of missing scales and wounds every now and then. They will sometimes show aggression to other fish as well. I had a 6" Cichla Temensis living with them and was raised with them since they were smaller, but the B. microlepis eat like pigs and eat pellets and grow much faster. I was planning on letting Neal (Peacock Bass) grow the temensis out for me but the next morning it was too late. The Emperors had ganged up on the temensis. Emperors are eating machines. All the do is eat and sh@t. and they sh@t a lot!!!!! My tank is 250Gs and I do roughly about 175G-200G of water change every 4 days just to keep up with the waste they produce.
As for personality, I agree that Cichla have more personality. I like to play the coin toss at the tank game with them with their lightning fast attacks. Emperors are just impressive to look at. They act more like a Giant Oscar.

Fishbase has been wrong at least according to male haits.
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=12318&CFID=12294&CFTOKEN=43312316

Even though this is standard length I know haits get bigger than this.

I heard or read somewhere that Oreochromis tanganicae got real big.

Those quoting fishbase did not pay attention to the fact it referred to a male
http://www.fishbase.org/summary/speciessummary.php?id=6008
in a book on Rift lake cichlid it stated the male was either one or two thirds the size of the female and gave female lenght as three foot
http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Boulengerochromis&species=microlepis&id=381
Another good website as maximum length 70 cm
http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=89

There is a claim that the Red Terror can reach 2-3 feet.
