first off, will gars who are feeding off pellets eat other fish? i'm sure the answer to that is yes

can fish like silver dollars or sunfish be housed with gars if they are large enough? I want tankmates for my new gar (which is about 12 inches) but i don't want a bunch of big predators in the tank, unless I could get a few piranha to live happy with a gar.

I was thinking maybe a school of silver dollars or pumpkinseeds since both get pretty large

- yes on the gars eating other fish even if they eat pellets.
- no on the silver dollars as they are not good tankmates due to the "silver fish issue" and can spook the gars as well as elicit attacks. sunfishes are also not great due to aggression.

-again, no on sunfishes and silver dollars.

- please see the PINNED TOPIC in this forum labeled gar tankmates as that will provide a lot more information/details...check out other pinned topics while you're there. good luck--

I wouldn't mix piranha with anything besides other piranha.

My florida is about 10", lives with a 7" oscar and a 6" ocell p. bass without any issues (as of yet anyway). They say you shouldnt mix with aggressive/semi-aggressive fish, I am monitoring.

i'm just not interested in all those fish in the sticky, i was hoping to have something that's not an oversized preditor, also there aren't that many fish listed in the sticky. so looks like it may just be the one gar in the tank

tinfoil barbs are silver fish = just as bad an idea as silver dollars are imo. flagtails are known to be slimecoat eaters on occasion but I don't have much experiance with them personally.. and they are silvery as well..

peacocks are your best bet i have them with my FG's and they are happy as can be no issues what so ever until feeding time since the bass take the food faster otherwise they are happy.

Plus peacocks look nice too when they get bigger.

that's because to keep gars properly, there actually aren't many fishes that work great with them (not many fishes are as prone to broken backs, etc). if you are willing to risk this, then more options are there, but we don't necessarily consider it responsible gar-keeping, and so they aren't listed.

keeping relative size and individual personalities in mind, the following can often work:
- South American lungfish
- Australian lungfish
- various bichir species
- African bonytongue
- Anguillid eels
- other gars

good luck--
