FL owners -- Garage Tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have any in the main part of the garage but do keep some in the back of the garage in a separate room that I built. This room is open to the rest of the house. The main part would way too hot during the summer. I also have some tanks in a covered porch and when I was keeping SW fish out there I would freeze water jugs and float them in the tanks to bring the water temps down on the really hot days.

I have many tanks in my garage. Summer is no problem. It's winter that might cause problems for PB or other cichlids. I've kept Angels, Discus, and PB's in the garage. They all like the heat. In winter I plug in tank heaters or space heaters.

Winter in Florida will be your concern with pbass. They are TROPICALE~~ they'll be happy in summer water between 85-90*F, no prob, you'll see some great colors on them. A lot of owners keep adults at lower temperatures just to save on their tank heating bills. Absolute will HAVE to keep up with the aeration and circulation, water doesn't carry oxygen very well at higher temps.

You should be fine no problem for now. When winter hits again just watch the temps but still, my room heats up burning and my fish have no problem. I am from Florida too and kept pacu outside year round. Your pbass will have no problems in your garage, yes they are tropical fish but they can handle short spurts of low temps just not for days in a row. Heat should not be a problem like Heatherbeast said. This is a reason why they are thriving in miami. You will be fine If you live anywere between central Florida and miami. Not sure about the top of Florida cause I hear about weather mood swings up there.

summer my water hits about 84 in the winter it will drop below 70 so i put up some insulation board up and made a fake wall and used one of those oiled filled electric heaters and that keeps it really warm on med air temp is 84-86 and water temp between 80-82 depending how close the tank is to the ceiling. hey if the water is getting too hot in the garage just keep the garage door open and when the sun goes down after a few hours the water will cool down.

Awesome, thanks for all the responses. As stated it is quite temporary but my main concern was the month of June when it gets hot. I'll just be sure to turn off the heater (that currently keeps my water at about 85-86 degrees), when the weather starts to pick back up. Its been getting cold up here lately but the heater is keeping the tank pretty steady temp of mid 80's
