great point about the protein! however, it may become a problem since it is the main diet of my ray and bichirs.... what would the side effects of a high protein diet be in relationship to a flag tail?

usually vegetarian fish will suffer from a potentially fatal side effect called Bloat if they consume too much protein/meat as vegetarian fish. symptoms are pretty much self explanatory.

you could feed your flagtails before dropping in the massivore staple for the other fish. its ok if other fish grab either of their foods. predatory fish won't hurt from eating veggies the way herbivores will when eating meat.

also, the shredded carrots idea sounds wonderful! would i have to blanch the carrots or zucchini? what prep is involved when feeding vegetables to flag tails?

you wouldn't really have to do anything besides making sure the pieces are small enough for them to swallow. its good to find a balanced size to make your pieces of vegetable so that you won't end up with a whole harvest moon in your filter and your fish don't choke. i would throw in small chunks about 9mm cuts one by one to let them fill up quickly instead of dumping a bunch of little pieces in there that they may not find before it gets stuck behind decor or filtered. just make the size you cut bitesize according to how much they can chew. minimize sharp edges of course.

one last question :)

what other good food should i feed? is there a specific flake or pellets that would be extremely beneficial to a flag tail? perhaps algae wafers or spirulina?

algae wafers and spirulina are both good staples for them when your too lazy to prepare produce for them. much like massivore pellets are for your predators, while live foods are always better for them, fresh produce goes for your flagtails.

hope that helps
