Sorry to hear.
I was searching for info on flagtails seeing I just picked one up and this thread came up.
Did you get another by chance?
no not yet, will some time!

I just saw some three inchers for fifteen dollars each but they looked like they were gasping heavily.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I noticed that they move their lips/mouths a lot but these fish were pumping their gill covers which made me suspect that there were issues with the quality of the water in the system.

I have had several over the years current one is about 15in total length and about 3in thick.
They are supposed to be shoalers in nature but when kept in tanks will squabble all the time with each other but nothing else.
I have found that they like to shoal with other silver fish more than each other and jump far less when not kept in multiples.
feed as large barbs - pond food + veg mainly but will try anything.
mine is in with 5 tinfoil barbs,1 gold tinfoil, acanthicus adonis, perruno, giraffe cat, megaladorus in 250gal 96x26x27in heigh tank with pond pump in sump + 4 air stones.

Agreed with jprp :)

I had one for three years in a 125 that grew from 3 inches to 16 inches in two years. This fish was with mascara barbs and my large L091 3 beacon pleco. He was as bullet proof as anything schooled with the barbs never bothered anything. My brother begged me to sell him. He still has him in a 90 with some roseline sharks. Like

Had a 16 inch in my 125. This fish was as bullet proof as hell. I kept him with 8 mascara barbs that he schooled with also had a 10 inch 3 beacon pleco in there. Flagtail never bothered anything till I got another flagtail then constant chasing. I gave the new comer away and harmony to the tank was restored. My brother bugged me to sell the beast and I did. He still has him in with some bala and roseline sharks in a 90 with 0 promblems. I wish I would have kept him. Very comical fish with the big Mick Jagger/Steven Tyler Lips! LOL

Yes they are a cool fish!
