I know these guys will suck on the slime coat but will they eat things small enough to fit in their mouth?

I haven't had problems with them in tanks with small fish like cardinals (no real aggression). They seem to be more of a pain to bigger fish, especially round broad fish like silver dollars. They will chase bigger fish like decent sized clowns and such but seem to leave the tiny fish alone. I had one that would only chase active fish. The more active the fish was the more irritated the flagtail would get. I wouldn't rule out the possibility though... Especially if a fish is weakened. It will get at it, kill it, and suck it down if it is small enough. If it's a bit big it will rasp it for hours till it eats it.

Piggybacking: are they safe in planted tanks, or do they eat plants?

I've never had plants with the flagtails. But I would make an educated guess of probably not plant friendly. The flagtails r always constantly sucking on the tank walls/decorations. I just c the flagtail sucking on the plant too often/much that damage will prob occur.

Yes flag tails will eat plants
Mine has destroyed a few silk plants in his say
Mine can't have any plants but heavy plastic
He destroyed all real and silk plants in my tank

We have a 3 inch flag tail in the womans planted tank he just eats the algae off the plants doesnt shred them.....but hes only 3 inches
