Flagtail prochilodus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not long after this post, I went and got a 2 inch Flagtail. It went into my 100g planted tank where it played nice for a couple of months, then it started beating on my bosemani rainbows. By then it had grown an inch. Then I switched it up to the 220g with the big guys. Same thing played out and it's attacking my Marbled Headstanders. Now it's going into a small pond in my mum's garden with platies and nothing else. Lesson learnt. Flag tails do not go with similar shaped fish or related species of fish.

Yes I believe that is a pretty big flaw with them that they can't be with fish that look the same in color or shape

Sorry your experience was not what you had hoped for with your flagtail.
But it has been very different from my experience with both fish I have had, the current one, and another, years ago. I guess it is very possible that individual fish exhibit different behaviours; it could a gender thing (not that one can tell gender in flagtails), or something else. I do know (from others) that having 2 or 3 together in a smallish tank is simply not possible. So it is either a single one, or many in a very large tank.
My current one (~10 inch) lives with fish of about 6+ inches (Hemiodus), and angel, some plecos, cories and penguin tetras. About a month ago I added 15 very small (young, less than 1 inch) lemmon tetras and everyone of them is still there and they are growing well. My experience is therefore, is quite different.
I hope your Prochi does well in the the pond. My expectation is that it will.
