Quarantine Tank
It seems like every 6-9 months my flagtails eventually develop a taste for slime! I have given so many away to friends. I just gave another one away yesterday, going to get another one again very soon.

Does anybody else experience this? Its like they do a perfect job keeping the tank clean and then one day they turn on you! GRRRR!!!! So who else goes through this? Anybody?

It was exact same for me.. Around 6 months or so he started to pick on my marbles, kind of wierd they never messed with any of my other rays though..

I had the same problem.... Basically for 6 months my flagtail was fine.. until he too started going after slime coat...

The result was a dead Jardini and a Gar.. til this day i dunno if both were killed by him.. but their scales were disappearing..

ANYWAYS.. the flagtail was moved to by bigger tank.. where i keep Plecos.. and the flag tail started developing a taste for cucumbers and potatoes.. its been 2 months since that time and my flagtail hasn't been going after any slime coat off my two silvers...

I dunno if this has solved the problem.. but i find that.. cucumbers twice a week helps them from going after slime coat.. plus the tankmates i have is 3times bigger than my fei feng.. if that helps... :(

Just my two cents..

suppose it depends on the indivdual?

Yes, but in my experience the majority eventually go after slime....

I had the opposite problem:

look who was feeding on my old Prochilodus:

That could be a natural behaviour, my small hoplocats does the same to their bogger tankmates

i had the same problem

i had mine for 5 years and found they only suck on rays when the females are of breeding age and size

i got bored of it and just sold my 14incher

it only seams to be females they suck on they may let off some kind of hormone thats male rays and flagtails are attracted to

they never seam to do any real damage and it would take a sick ray that just sits their and gets sucked to death

i have only got small white patches nothing bad but it does seam to stress the rays

Mine did not. In any case, in their particular neighbourhood, they were lucky to be alive, they had no chance of even phantasizing about sucking...
