Ok so it is Semaprochilodus taeniurus we are talking about.. 
Well why do you only keep one..? Its a fish that lives in groups in nature.. Here they feed on plants.. Only keeping one might be the reason they do it..? stress..? do you remember to feed them some greens..?
Im getting 5 Semaprochilodus taeniurus soon to live with my two new sp. columbia.. I hope it will turn out well..

Theres gotta be different kinds of fei fengs...
i know 1 that grows big fast and 1 that doesnt really grow big.
1 also has 11-13 flags on the tail while the other have 6-7 only.

whats their differences... ?

if you keep more than 1 per tank they will kill each other

from the 1st signs of a problem i would have removed the FF
how chould that have happened without the owner seeing something was wrong
when my FF started sucking on my female to much i took it out and put it in a 2ft tank you would be mad to let it go that far without doing something
dont forget the owner is saying the FF was only 3inch even a 12inch FF wouldnt be able to do that much damage over night
as soon as my FF touched my ray it would swim off
below is a picture of what my FF done in 2 weeks it wasnt bad enought to remove the FF
The damage was done in less then 24 hours. I feed them each evening at around 6-7pm. Got home form the office the day later and not only this one, but also another smaller Motoro was slightly injured. My FF is a serial sucker.
