Flake food vs pellet

All, is it just me or is flake food messier than pellet food. It seems like I'm rwgularly cleaning gunk from my filters when I feed flake food on a daily basis my cichlids are small at the moment which is why I feed flake. I am considering making them eat pellets.

I just make flake smaller by crushing in between thumb and finger for the smaller fish.

I hate flake food, I also find it to be messy. Pellets are typically far more stable in water, and far more nutrient dense.

Definitely more messy, though that can have some benefits sometimes (small sifting cichlids for instance) and of course when you have fish too small for pellets. It's not like it's something that can't be overcome though, just increased maintenance. We did it for years before pellets really were a thing.

If you don't mind my asking what pellets are you all using and why? I've used sticks in the past as well they seem to fall in the same category as pellets. Anybody have any experience with Omega one brand pellets? Just ordered some and am curious what y'all are using

You could also be dropping in too much of the flakes at each feeding.

Part of.the problem is that I have a fluval 405 canister filter that creates enough turbulance that some of the food gets pulled under water befor the fish can get to it

I see...the sticks are just a form of floating pellets in ny opinion.

I agree, I haven't fed flake for years in large part because it is so messy. On the rare occasion I can't get a fish to take sinking pellets I use floating pellets.

I have heard that sinking pellets are better for fish as it is a more natural way to feed. As a side note I also heard that floating pellets are thought to contribute to swim bladder issues in some fish, an interesting thought i.m.o.
