i feel like i am the only person using cichlid flakes! i havent had any kind of problems for over 2 yrs with the flakes. the water is good, clear and fish appetites are good. would there be any advantage to switch to pellets?

The fact that the floating pellets float untill eaten helps with not falling to the bottom and getting stuck in the gravel like flakes do.
Also if they're not totally hungry..(which isn't common) and they don't finish up everything, it's nice you can just go in there with a net and scoop them out.

Plus if you're feeding shrimp, you can shove mad amounts of pellets in shrimp, where as flakes...not so much.:)

That's just my 2 cents though.

Flake? whats that? LOL!! Pellets just seem more convienent and cost efficient for larger cichlids. It would take a hell'va lotta flake to feed a large SA/CA cichlid...lol...

hikari gold or excel.....make sure you pay attention to tha crude protein content and fillers and shizz....I'd say frozen is tha shizz, fo sho! brine shrimp and spirulina enriched flakes are tight also...

word dawg word

what ever you do feed them make sure that you are not leaving it in the tank for too long if your fish have not finished all of it, meaning feed them only what they would be able to eat in about 5 minutes. then scoop out the rest with your net. that will prevent any problems with the ammonia and nitrite/nitrate levels in your tank

heh.
Gangsta gangsta fo sho.:)

I agree with him though.
Live and frozen are my all time favorite to feed the fish.
I do live brine shrimp, black worms, platies, mollies and frozen blood worms...
and tons of freeze dried krill.
I love to see the fish hit that **** hard as **** at the top of the tank, splashing water everywhere. :hearts:

Nothing wrong with flake if it's good quality. The type of cichlid you're feeding should also determine what you feed - larger cichlids might not pay any attention to flake. Additionally, many cichlids are herbivorous (Vieja, Herichthys, mbuna, etc.), so you'd want to be feeding a good spirulina flake to small herbivors, and perhaps a spirulina/veggie stick or pellet as they get larger. Mbuna would be happy on spirulina flake their entire lives.

It's also a good idea to mix up the diet a bit. My herbivorous cichlids get fresh or frozen veggies (peas, spinach, zucchini) and the carnivores get crickets, superworms or earthworms in addition to the pellets/flakes.

Most African cichlids shouldn't really be eatin gpellets because there is so much protein in them. Unless it is a spirulina pellet. If you want something big a meaty, throw in some Zuch. I feed my Mbuna mostly flake, and i do small meals throughout the day to make sure everyone's eating enough and there's no wasted food. But, that's just my opinion
