Flash my Super Red Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you very much for the info and explanation regarding tanning

About 2 months ago I got a NAN tanning light and tried it but after 3 days she stopped eating or ate very little, meantime something went wrong with the light and it stopped working and the next day Flash was eating normal again so there I was already put off by the idea of tanning.

I am planning on upgrading my tank to a 3.5m and then i will put it next to a window for sunlight.
She has naturaly a nice rich dark pink colour.
I understand not all go blood red but as long as she looks 'nice' and is healthy that is my main concern. The blood red... well its what we all hope for i suppose... but not the most important...
Her cheeky character is certainly comimg out without any special encouragement!!

With natural sunlight, the Aro doesn't encounter such problems like losing its appetite etc which is a major advantage. Your red has good bulk and it greatly contributes to the overall look of the fish. When you eventually get the tank upgrade, nature will do the rest for you.

Could you enlighten me - what is the process to get Aros where you are including import license etc?

+1 on Import. I will need it

Asian Arowana are legal here in South Africa at least

I am not sure of every detail but Aros follow the same import procedures as normal common fish, there is no restriction on the import of Arowanas, a normal import permit is sufficient the problem is to find a supplier that can source one and that will bring it in for you and the other problem is the price they land here and are sold for .
Most LFS"s dont import themselves, they rely on a supplier/importer and if that importer doesnt have enough breeder contacts then you wait for ever if you ever lucky to get one
I will pm you the contact details of one of the big LFS's that usually help us with exotic fish even though sometimes it takes forever... I know the owner goes to Singapore often.

The most common Asian Arowana brought in, is the Red Tail Gold which usually sells here at about 8 or 9000.00 SA Rands or the Banjar at around 6000.00 rands
The Super Red landed here at just under 30 000.00 Rands
At these prices not everyone can buy one and because people dont buy the suppliers dont bother to source them
I think people are also scared to just buy off the internet notknowing if its a trustworthy seller and how the fish will be shipped

But I will send you some contacts, maybe it can help us in future!

Only 8-9k?!? Wow. That's pretty damn cool.

I wouldn't mind an RTG aro

Thats the last I saw late last year, not sure what it would be now.
8-9k for crazy people like you and i yes....
Jardinis are easly available and not high priced at all, they go for the same as silvers.
Depending on size lets say 900 rands..

The one shop I saw a 13cm silver for 1.5 and the guy asked if I wanted to order a Jar for 2k. For my 250 litre

It was an expensive shop, my normal LFS will get them cheaper I think

I ask simply because I know many of the breeders here after so many years in the hobby and given the crazy prices and the rarity of good quality Aros in many parts of the world outside South East Asia, I wonder if I can be of some help. Do not misunderstand, there is no conflict of interest on my part, just wondering if it would be easier to acquire Aros than what you guys have to go through. Anyway it's a thought...nothing might come out of it or perhaps it could make some hobbyist really happy..who knows.

I could share local LFS prices for comparison and to give an insight to what it would cost the average hobbyist here takes to acquire Aros but I am unsure if it will violate forum rules in the event there are any.

As long as you don't state the LFS it should be fine. I have put prices up before with no issue, it's comparing the hobby in different parts lf the world

I appreciate very much your thoughts of trying to help... Any help we can get is appreciated!!!
As I mentioned, it was nearly two years of begging and no one would source me one until one day we were looking at my son's Red tail gold's certificate and I saw the name of the people she came from and I took a chance and googled it and emailed them and that's how I eventually managed to get mine....

When they phoned me to say she had landed and they were on their way to collect her from the airport I still didnt want to believe it was true...
until my son who collected her sent me pictures, i didnt believe it!

Anyway... all worked out well and i love her to pieces even though she is becoming a very naughty brat....
