I am going to be setting up a 180 in a few months and Im planning on painting the back glass black. I was just wondering if flat or glossy paint would look better.

Depends on what you want. Do you want a shiny background if so go glossy, if not go flat.

Gloss black will show any imperfections in the paint... runs, thin spots, etc.

I've done both, I highly suggest flat black. If you scratch the back you can just fill it in with some more flat black paint. If it's glossy you'll be able to tell where the scrape in the paint was no matter how much you try to paint it in.

Also, glossy paint takes away from the effect in my opinion. You paint the background black to give it a nice clean look that brings attention to the foreground (ie. the fish and decor). Glossy black doesn't accomplish this goal as your eye is constantly drawn to the background.

I can't say enough good things about the flat black, it's treated me well.:headbang2

We're doing flat black, because of all the aforementioned reasons, on our new 300 gallon Deep Dimension aquarium. It will be the first time we've ever painted the back of an aquarium.

I know a lot of folks paint the back, but I'd be very reluctant do to the fact you could change your mind. Maybe get some poster board and tape it on the back???

It's alright, you can get the paint off using a razor blade or some mineral spirits(paint remover). Also, use spray paint so you don't get streaks in the paint!
